Enel Green Power wins an award in Guatemala for its innovative solutions

For the past 16 years, the Guatemalan Chamber of Industry has been giving Industrial Awards at its annual Conference. It’s an opportunity for the Chamber’s member companies to shine and highlight their work as a source of growth and development for the country. For the second year running, Enel Green Power Guatemala has been one of the event’s stars, taking home the prestigious award in the Innovation category for our commitment to digitalization and our constant pursuit of cutting-edge solutions. At the 2020 edition we won the award in the Environment category, for activities carried out to protect the Samalá River, which feeds into the El Canadà power plant, one of our four hydroelectric plants in Guatemala. Improving processes and the way of doing work In 2021, it was our innovation initiatives, specifically those related to the digitalization of the four hydroelectric plants we manage, which won the award. The technologies that we have implemented are focused on safer and more efficient production processes, while improving competitiveness, security, environmental sustainability and the work of our colleagues. Smart glasses, drones and data Fernando Luna, Manager of the Northwest region of EGP in Guatemala, explains that among the initiatives highlighted "we have implemented the use of smart glasses to carry out inspections, safety audits or visits to vendors and customers, thereby saving time and resources to make processes more efficient.” Another innovation is the use of drones, as Jairo Yac, an Electrical Maintenance technician, explains: "With drones, we carry out inspections and create topographic maps that help us identify potential vulnerabilities in order to prevent risks for our collaborators." Finally, as highlighted by Eduardo Concinos, a Hydraulic Works engineer, data is our ally in improving processes: “We have implemented a digital platform that helps us create a database of topographic, geographic, meteorological and hydrographic research, thereby enabling us to map risk areas for operations and speed up data collection processes.” With this, "we have systematized our control processes using technological solutions that allow us to centrally control our four hydroelectric plants," says Carlos Alconero of Global Digital Solutions Guatemala, who adds: "Thanks to these technologies, we have digitalized various processes, such as work permits, inventory control, recording and monitoring biodiversity and routine checks at our dams, among others.” Innovation is therefore at the service of our plants, starting with the safety of our people and the efficiency of our plants to protect the environment. This is because innovation is our vision.
