A Giro d’Italia around EGP facilities

Energy makes the world go around and it’s what moves people, too. Enel harnesses the energy of water, wind, the sun and the depths of the earth in order to power cities and businesses – but the Group also actively supports sports, the expression par excellence of people’s own energy. This year Enel Green Power is an Official Partner of the Giro d’Italia, one of the most riveting sporting events in the world and now in its 105th edition, while Enel is the “Title Sponsor – Maglia Rosa” (the iconic Pink Jersey) of the event. Following tradition, the Giro d’Italia will begin outside Italy – this year in Budapest on May 6 – and will conclude on May 29 at the finish line in the spectacular Verona Arena. The stages of the Giro and our power plants As it winds its way across Italy, the Giro is also a journey that traces our company’s deep, day-to-day relationship with local areas. For us, each stage of the Giro is a step along a path we have been building for years: the road to a sustainable future. The EGP facilities with which we are driving the energy transition can be found all across Italy, and the route of the Giro runs past many of them. This can be seen from the very first Italian stage. The stage on May 10 climbs from Avola in southeastern Sicily up to a height of almost 2000 meters and the Sapienza sull’Etna mountain refuge, passing near the town of Carlentini, home to our industrial platform NextHy, a laboratory dedicated to experimentation and production of green hydrogen, the sustainable resource that will flank electricity in a cleaner energy system for the future. Equally innovative and pioneering is our 3SUN photovoltaic panel factory in Catania, one of the most technologically advanced facilities in Europe and shortly to become the continent’s largest: thanks to funds from the European Union, the facility is set to become a Gigafactory, increasing its production 15-fold. The second stage begins right in Catania and the route continues to Messina, home to two of our hydroelectric plants on the river Alcantara, famed for its stunning gorges. Travelling northwards along the Italian peninsula, the Giro will pass from the Calabria region up to Naples and then across to the Adriatic coast, where it will enjoy a close encounter with the hydroelectric plant in Pedaso in the Marche region. The concentration of our plants will increase even more in the crucial phase of the Giro: the Alpine stages. The thirteenth stage begins on the coast, in Sanremo, and crosses the Maritime Alps, where we have numerous hydroelectric plants, the standout example being the Entracque plant, which is the largest in Italy and one of the biggest in all of Europe. Four days later, the race departs from Salò, on Lake Garda, to tackle the Lombardy Alps. The route takes the riders through the Valcamonica and the Valtellina Valleys, home to both pumped storage and production plants, where the dams form a magnificent system in the valleys beneath Mount Adamello. One of Italy’s most famous dams is the Fedaia Dam at the foot of Mount Maromolada, the queen of the Dolomites, which will serve as the backdrop for the penultimate stage and the last leg in the mountains prior to the final time trial in Verona. The Italian “classics” The Giro d’Italia is one of the three great stage races on the international circuit, together with the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España. Italy is also the venue for numerous other races known as the “classics”, several of which are sponsored by Enel Green Power. These include the Strade Bianche (March 5), Giro di Sicilia (April 12-15), Gran Piemonte (October 6) and Il Lombardia (October 8). In addition, the Enel Group continues its association with the Gran Fondo Strade Bianche, which is held on March 6 in Siena. This year Enel Green Power is the competition’s Presenting Sponsor, as it is for the Gran Fondo Giro Lombardia on October 9. As is the case with the Giro d’Italia, the regional classics also reflect the values our Group shares with Italy’s great cycling events: concern for the local area, respect for the environment, team spirit and the ability to innovate while maintaining strong ties to the great tradition of a sport that has always been and will always be enormously popular.
