World Wind Day: the “revolution” of green energy starts from the wind

June 15, was designated as World Wind Day in an effort to raise awareness and inform the public about the benefits to the environment and the sustainability of the planet from the use of wind energy and the need to safeguard air quality. The initiative belongs to the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). With a 14-year history in Greece, we are leading the wind energy industry with an installed capacity in the country which reaches a total of 368.20 MW. The crown of production is the innovative cluster of wind farms in Kafireas in South Evia, the largest in the country with a total capacity of 154.1 MW. It includes 7 wind farms with 67 wind turbines and will be able to produce about 480 GWh per year, reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by 315,000 tons per year. It should be noted that according to statistics published by the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA), the power generation capacity from wind farms installed worldwide exceeds 840 GW , and in conclusion it is worth noting that the operation of a wind farm with a capacity of 10 MW can power more than 7,000 households and save about 7,000 tons of oil. The road to wind energy These results show an important step towards the energy transition: for example, the nearly 60 GW installed last year can cover more than 6% of global electricity demand. Nowadays, for over 60% of the population, wind is the most affordable option for electricity generation. However, the road to full energy autonomy from green energy production is long and we are working systematically in this direction. Furthermore, in the context of the current energy crisis and with the aim of moving away from fossil fuel dependence, the European Commission has introduced the REPowerEU package, the main pillars of which are the diversification of energy supply, energy savings and the acceleration of the energy transition. RES are at the forefront of the effort to achieve energy independence, as the plan proposes their massive scaling and acceleration in energy production, for the industry, transportation and the buildings. REPowerEU sets the new European binding RES target for 2030 at 45%, while at the same time significantly increasing RES targets in the transport and industry sectors. In order to achieve the REPowerEU targets, the projected installed wind power by 2030 should reach 510 GW (compared to 189 GW in 2021). "Thus, indirectly, wind energy can be used to reduce the environmental footprint of the most energy-intensive sectors. Wind: An affordable resource Greece is the ideal place to use wind (and the sun), as wind and sun are plentiful most days of the year. Thus, wind energy is one of the key technologies for economic recovery and environmental prosperity as it already contributes to the creation of millions of jobs, the provision of more affordable energy and the significant reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. Also, thanks to the reduction of technology costs (since 2010, the price of wind turbines has decreased by 40%) and at the same time the increased demand due to decarbonisation, in the next 10 years, 70% of the newly installed power will come exclusively from wind and photovoltaic parks, while by 2050 50% of electricity will be generated by the wind and the sun. Investment in the wind To support a green transition while avoiding climate change, we are investing in renewable energy sources over 2.5GW in Greece, in the next years thus saving thousands tons of carbon dioxide, while exploiting new growth opportunities for sustainable energy around the world and reaffirming its role in the global energy transition. The investment plan for the future of wind energy includes innovative projects for the reuse and / or recycling of wind turbines when they reach the end of their life, avoiding the use of landfills. Thanks to these and other innovation projects aimed at using more circular and sustainable materials in its plants, we are ready to lead the full use of green energy with even greater efficiency.
