Our Vamvakies agrivoltaic project wins a prize at the 2022 Bravo Sustainability Awards

We have won an important award! Our educational program "Vamvakies: a Social Green Project" received a distinction at the Bravo Sustainability Awards, which are part of Bravo Sustainability Week 2022. The ceremony, which was held in the Old Parliament Building, was organized by the QualityNet Foundation. The award was received by Chryssa Giannopoulou, Head of Sustainability, Enel Green Power Hellas. Agri-food entrepreneurship The aim of the program is to help the residents of the Kozani Prefecture engage in agri-food entrepreneurship. The initiative was developed by Enel Green Power and Wise Greece and is being implemented in collaboration with CluBE, with the support of the Municipality of Kozani. Wise Greece defines itself as “a non-profit social enterprise with a double mission: supporting small farmers and Greek products across the country, and using the profits to purchase food for the homeless, children and elderly in need,” while ClubE is another non-profit and stands for “The Cluster of Bioeconomy and Environment of Western Macedonia.” Through a series of state-of-the-art seminars taught by experienced instructors from Wise Greece, participants are provided with the necessary tools to create their own sustainable business with agricultural products. In addition to theoretical training, the program also includes a practical element, which is supported by CluBE This is because, for the first time in Greece, aromatic plants, such as paliurus (also known as Jerusalem thorn) and mountain tea, will be cultivated in a photovoltaic park. Female farmers The park in question is "Vamvakies,” which is located near Polymylos. Specifically, a group of women from Ellispontos which, like Polymylos, is part of the Kozani Munipality, were equipped with all the necessary tools and materials for planting and have already set up their crops in an area of the photovoltaic park. Once the plants are fully grown, the women will be able to sell the final products and use the revenues to develop their own businesses, essentially creating the first line of agricultural products from a photovoltaic project. It is a perfect example of agrivoltaics and fits several of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, such as SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 15 (Life on Land). This year saw a record number of entries for the Bravo Institution, with more than 300 initiatives in the Annual Social Dialogue on Sustainable Development, by 185 business, local government and civil society organizations, as well as academic institutions. The initiatives were evaluated by the Bravo Institution’s scientific committees, which consist of 170 members. The best initiatives for supporting a sustainable future emerged, thanks to the involvement of more than 16,000 active citizens.
