One of the challenges with renewable energy is that production levels can vary due to unpredictability in weather conditions like cloudy or low wind days that present lower energy generation. Utility-scale BESS can capture excess energy production from renewables and store it for later use.

What is storage capacity used for?

Battery storage is particularly useful for storing surplus electricity for optimal use during spikes in energy demand, especially useful during elevated temperatures, power outages and unforeseen weather events. Additionally, BESS can provide operating reserve capacity for the grid operators to have available for emergency conditions.

What technologies can storage be integrated with?

Battery storage can be integrated with all types of energy, including wind, solar, geothermal, oil, gas, nuclear, among other sources. It is fuel-neutral.

Is battery storage economical?

Battery storage systems can store energy when prices are low and dispatch when rates are high. Adding more supply onto the grid helps customers to avoid premium pricing that utilities charge during times of peak demand. BESS also can provide ancillary services to the grid which reduces reliance on costly thermal generation sources.

Is storage efficient?

Storage ensures the balance between energy production and consumption by storing surplus energy produced and returning it to system when needed, as well as to deal with unexpected events in terms of supply and demand. Utility-scale BESS units connected to the power grid at our sites are also monitored digitally and remotely for efficient operation.

Is battery storage safe?

Our BESS units are housed in containers arranged on a parcel of land, connected to the power grid, and are safeguarded by advanced safety features, which are monitored digitally and remotely for safe operation. Throughout the development and construction of our battery storage projects, we work closely with local fire departments to meet the safety requirements in our communities. Enel is a party to fire safety standards such as NFPA 855 and a member of the Energy Storage Association. Enel signed the Energy Storage Association’s Corporate Responsibility Pledge, further demonstrating its commitment to safety when deploying energy storage resources.

Are batteries in our projects recycled?

Lithium-ion batteries are recyclable. At the battery system’s end of life, Enel will work with our suppliers to pursue recycling or repurposing applications. Enel is committed to best practices for sustainability and circularity.

Our ambition to accelerate the energy transition and reach America’s net zero carbon goal by 2035 drives our effort to install energy storage capacity at our sites. The market’s demands for system flexibility combined with decreasing costs in battery technology is leading BESS to play a more important role than ever in the energy market. By 2023, an additional 3.6 GW of largescale battery storage is planned to be operational in the US.
