Accelerating a Cleaner Future with Clorox and Enel Green Power

Serving sustainable food through McDonald’s & NALC’s partnership with Enel

McDonald's Corporation is the world’s leading global foodservice retailer operating over 40,000 outlets in 119+ countries worldwide. Its partnership with Enel at Blue Jay solar in Texas is putting it on an aspirational path towards achieving its sustainability goals and emissions reductions targets.

Partnership

Serving brighter futures in our communities

In November 2022, McDonald's Corporation and all five members of the restaurant chain’s North American Logistics Council (NALC) – Martin Brower, Armada, Earp Distribution, The Anderson-DuBose Company and Mile Hi Foods signed a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) for a 189 MW portion of Enel Green Power’s Blue Jay solar plus storage project in Texas.

Through this VPPA, the global restaurant chain is set to cover 100% of McDonald’s U.S. logistics supply chain’s electricity load with renewable electricity. This aggregated electricity purchase from Blue Jay solar will amount to approximately 470,000 MW hours of renewable energy annually, equivalent to avoiding over 170,000 C02 emissions per year, or the greenhouse gas emissions from over 36,000 passenger vehicles driven over the course of one year.

McDonald’s is prioritizing action across the areas that contribute most to our enterprise carbon footprint, including restaurant energy, supply chain, and packaging and waste.

Sustainability Highlights

The pledge to achieve net zero

McDonald’s was the first global restaurant chain to set a science-based target to reduce emissions across its restaurants, offices and supply chain. In 2021, the Corporation joined the United Nations Race to Zero campaign, pledging to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. To reach this ambitious target, it has evolved existing 2030 climate targets to align with the Science Based Targets initiatives Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign, which is to keep global temperature rises below 1.5°C.
