The Flumendosa “secondo salto” hydroelectric power plant, Italy
The Flumendosa “secondo salto” (literally “second jump”) hydroelectric plant, which is located in the municipality of Villagrande Strisaili in Sardinia, is part of the Flumendosa River hydroelectric complex. The complex consists of three impoundment hydroelectric plants and five upstream dams. The Flumendosa “secondo salto” is located in the middle and is the largest of the three plants in terms of installed capacity.
The power plant has three Pelton turbine - Horizontal axis alternator units, while a150kV transformer station is located nearby.
Construction of the Alto Flumendosa plants was initiated by the Sardinian Electric Company in 1928. Work was, however, suspended, following the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and the subsequent international financial crisis and depression. Work was resumed in 1941, only to be suspended in July 1943. It was resumed again toward the end of 1947 and completed in 1949: in the spring of that year the first two power plants, including the “secondo salto,” entered into operation.
The first parallel was run in 1949.

Impact on local communities
Since the 1950s, the Flumendosa plants have been providing valuable water storage both for the Villagrande Strisaili municipality that hosts them and for much of the province of Ogliastra. They constantly maintain the necessary reserve and allocate the required volumes to multiple uses.
The plants also allow the effects of torrential flooding of the rivers that flow through this part of Sardinia to be mitigated and, more often than not, eliminated.
