The Isola Palanzano Power Plant has been crucial to the development of the area: increasing employment in the surrounding areas has been a driving force for the establishment of many mountain resorts.
Isola Palanzano played a key role not only in the national electrical system but also during World War II as a strategic base for the Allies. Equipped with vast and numerous rooms, with a warm temperature even in winter, but above all provided with a telephone connection to the different provinces of the Apennines, it was also an ideal place for British Major Charles Holland and his deputy Michael Tyler, supported by central chief Giuseppe Zucchellini. The stations had their own telephone line, in times when connections were extremely difficult and precarious, and the one in Isola was connected to Bosco and Marra (in the municipality of Corniglio), Rigoso and Rimagna (in the municipality of Monchio), Selvanizza (in the municipality of Palanzano), Ligonchio, Aulla and La Spezia because the lines supplied electricity to the military arsenal at the naval shipyards.
