Ponte Malon hydroelectric power plant

This hydroelectric plant is located in the municipality of Auronzo di Cadore (in the province of Belluno), Veneto. It is a run-of-river power plant, which directly uses the natural flow of a watercourse, with a catchment area of about 178 square kilometers: it uses part of the natural flow of the Ansiei stream, which is a tributary of the Piave River, and the discharged flows from the Somprade and Val Da Rin power plants. Water discharge occurs just upstream of the Santa Caterina reservoir.

Impact on local communities

The town is located in an 8-km long valley crossed by the Ansiei stream and nestled in the Dolomites, which were declared a World Heritage Site in 2009 by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. Prominent among the surrounding mountains are the Three Peaks of Lavaredo, which reach 3,000 meters and are the symbol of the Dolomites.

In the municipality of Auronzo di Cadore, there is also another element of great natural beauty: Lake Santa Caterina (created by the dam of the same name), which attracts many tourists every year. In July 2023, it also hosted the Junior and Under 23 Canoe Sprint World Championships.
