Budweiser and Kohler prove EGP’s PPAs are the best way to go green

Budweiser is the quintessential beer for the stars and stripes: launched to the market in 1876, it’s been one of the symbols of the United States around the world for over a century. The “King of Beers” is a global leader in the industry that is committed to social responsibility: from the promotion of responsible alcohol consumption, to the preservation and protection of the environment and support for local communities. The clean energy provided by Enel Green Power has become a fundamental part of this American icon. In September 2017, EGP signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Anheuser-Busch to power 50% of the electricity used by the brewer in its major U.S. operations from The Budweiser Wind Farm at Thunder Ranch, a share of Enel Green Power’s Thunder Ranch wind farm in Oklahoma. With an installed capacity of 298 MW, Thunder Ranch is able to produce over 1,100 GWh a year and Enel Green Power has invested 435 million U.S. dollars in the plant. 20 Billion Bottles of Beer As part of the PPA, Anheuser-Busch will purchase about 610 GWh of renewable energy a year from EGP. This is a major step forward for the brewery as it aims to reach 100% renewable energy by 2025. Anheuser-Busch is one of the almost 200 top companies worldwide that have committed to reaching exclusive use of renewable electricity with the RE100 initiative. The clean electricity acquired from EGP will allow Anheuser-Busch to produce more than 20 billion “green” bottles of beer every year. Inside the History of American Industry The PPA model offered by Enel Green Power is proving to be very successful, and many of the key examples come from the United States. Kohler Co. is one of the oldest and largest private American companies. A multi-national company in the manufacturing sector founded in 1873, it has developed its business worldwide in the last 145 years by preserving its family culture and the ability to innovate led by its founder, John Michael Kohler. The company, which lends its name to the town where its headquarters are located in Wisconsin, will use the 100 MW of energy purchased from EGP's Diamond Vista wind project to meet 100% of the electricity demand needed to power its activities in the United States and Canada, including 85 factories, offices and warehouses. Kohler predicts that the renewable energy purchased through its PPA with Enel Green Power will reduce its overall emissions of greenhouse gases by over 25%. The collaboration with EGP “is a component of our global strategy to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions,” explains Rob Zimmerman, Director of Sustainability for Kohler Co. Thanks to the renewable energy from the Diamond Vista wind farm, “we will continue to focus on energy efficiency, we will implement new production processes and we will develop new products that require less energy consumption to make.”
