Here’s how we’re working towards a just transition

A just energy transition means decarbonizing energy and making the economy greener in a way that is as equitable and inclusive as possible for all the stakeholders involved, from our employees to communities near the plants, suppliers, customers, etc. It means creating opportunities for decent work and ensuring that no one is left behind. But how is this principle applied in practice? As we work to shut down coal-powered stations globally by 2027 (and in Italy by 2025), we are redoubling our commitment to developing new skills that will allow the staff from these stations to take on different roles in the renewables sector. This is what is known as reskilling, and it’s also being offered to our contractors’ employees, who, once trained, will be able to work in the new renewables contract sector. That is the aim of Jobs for Just Transition, a project that focuses on providing vocational training courses for the energy transition. Launched in Italy, it is based on concrete, innovative action capable of having a sustainable impact. We’ve already organized two training courses in the municipality of Civitavecchia in the Province of Rome, which is home to the Torrevaldaliga Nord coal-fired power station: one was a photovoltaic panel installation training course which attracted 120 participants, and the other a welding course which has already had 10 participants. The aim was to prepare people to find work on photovoltaic farm building sites and ensure that certified workers were immediately available in the area. The courses were designed in collaboration with local stakeholders – such as Unindustria, Legacoop, Federlazio, CNA Sostenibile and Umana – and took into account the needs of both the local entrepreneurial community and those of Enel’s own business lines. Local employers’ associations and the public authorities were involved in selecting the trainees, some of whom were most at risk of losing their current jobs in the immediate future. Both courses were composed of a mix of theory modules, carried out online, and practical technical training at the training facilities, which included a special training construction site at Torre Valdaliga Nord and at the operational headquarters of one of the local contractors, which helped contain the cost of the initiative. The training focused in particular on job quality and safety, and gave many people new employment opportunities. The Jobs for Just Transition project’s excellent results will also allow us to launch new courses in other areas, so that we can continue to support local communities and our partner companies in this new phase of the energy transition. This is happening already in Brindisi, for instance. It’s also a model that can be extended in the near future across every area impacted by the closure of the big coal-fired plants or the development of new plants, to make the whole Just Transition concept even more concrete and effective.
