Ecological murals in Mexico City

Sustainability plays a fundamental role in everything we do, which is why we are always looking to join forces with allies who promote our commitment. And it was with this in mind that we decided to be part of Proyecto 17, an initiative that seeks to create an ecological gallery in Tlatelolco with the development of 17 murals, each of which is dedicated to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the UN's 2030 Agenda. We were particularly active in promoting a large mural that covers one side of the 15-story Tamaulipas Building. This mural represents one of our wide-reaching objectives: promoting sustainable cities and communities, in which all people can generate value for themselves, with the environment as a priority. This was possible thanks to the work of Adry del Rocío, a 3D urban artist, who has won more than 60 national and international awards. In adorning this emblematic building in Mexico City, in cooperation with Colectivo ADN (an association of artists), she gave life to the symbols that make up a sustainable city. Ecological art The message goes beyond art. Adry del Rocío created the piece using airlite, a paint that neutralizes pollutants in the same was that trees do, reducing them by 89%. For every 12 m2 of the mural, the pollution produced by one automobile per day is eliminated. Seeing as the mural covers almost 600 m2, it eliminates the pollution of around 50 automobiles per day. In addition to being actively ecological in terms of its physical composition, the mural is intended to be a public reminder of the role we all have in reconfiguring society to promote sustainability. The picture’s symbols include, among others, a jaguar helmet and the Aztec sun, which represents Mexico’s pre-Hispanic culture, a child, a reference to the future of communities, and a spotlight showing the importance of energy in our development, and especially the role of renewable energy which is key to mitigating global warming. Promoting culture with aligned objectives According to Enel Mexico’s Country Manager José Luis Navarro, “Our strategy is fully aligned with the SDGs in the 2030 Agenda, which is a joint challenge in which the energy sector plays a key role. It was natural for us to support this project which expresses the future we envision for the next generations. Specifically, this mural projects elements of a sustainable city: sustainable transportation, electrification and energy efficiency, as well as distributed renewable energy generation, all through art that enables us to reflect on the role we all have in transforming our environment." Furthermore, the mural located in the Tamaulipas building will have a life of at least a decade without requiring maintenance, thus highlighting the importance of caring for the environment through ecological art. A better future for all In conclusion, artist Adry del Rocío says, "Hand in hand with Colectivo ADN, we have promoted reflection on issues that as humanity we must commit to. Being part of this project has been a great opportunity to send the message that together we can collaborate for sustainable cities and communities by taking responsibility for our daily actions and that as Mexicans we have a key role to play in building a better tomorrow."
