Rafael González is Head of Iberia region for Enel Green Power and Thermal Generation, Enel’s business line for energy generation from conventional and renewable sources.
Rafael González has almost 30 years of experience in the energy sector, including more than 20 years in the construction and management of the company’s business in renewable energy. He was responsible for the company’s growing fleet, with over 100 plants and a capacity of over 3 GW in the United States and Canada.
These projects include a unique mix of wind, solar, geothermal and hydroelectric technologies. Before joining EGP-NA, he was in charge of the Operations & Maintenance division of Enel Green Power for four years. At the Rome headquarters, he was responsible for the Operations & Maintenance of over 750 renewable energy plants and coordinated more than 1,800 people in 16 different countries. Before that, he was Deputy Manager and Head of Development and Management of Projects at Enel-Unión Fenosa Energías Renovables S.A., a joint venture between Enel and Unión Fenosa, specialized in investments in renewable energy and cogeneration projects in Spain. He was on the board of the Spanish Association for Wind Energy (Asociación Empresarial Eólica) from 2005 to 2010, where he helped more than double its capacity (from 10 GW to 22 GW). In 2016, he was elected to the board of directors of the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). He started his career in the energy sector as an engineer at Foster Wheeler and later as Project Manager a Repsol Petróleo. Starting in 1993, he held several roles at Unión Fenosa Energías Especiales and Unión Fenosa Ingeniería, both subsidiaries of the Unión Fenosa Group.
